[1] This book derives from tape recordings made by Bobby Seale in the early fall of 1968 and the fall and winter of 1969-1970. The first series was made with the cooperation of the editors of Ramparts magazine. The second series was made in the San Francisco County Jail. Art Goldberg, formerly an editor of Ramparts, was responsible for the editing of the transcribed tapes;

[2] however, Mr. Seale supervised the preparation of the manuscript and every word is his. Eldridge Cleaver, David Hilliard, Robert Scheer, Charles R. Garry, general counsel to the Black Panther Party, Laura Furman, and John Simon were of assistance at various stages. The editors of Ramparts provided the initial stimulus and encouragement for this book.
