This introduction was written because Harriet Beecher Stowe was unable to write the preface on schedule due to a "severe domestic affliction, since her return to America."
But Stowe turned in the preface prior to the book's publication and a note at the end of the introduction describes the decision to "retain" both prefatory notes in part due to Lord Brougham's "deep interest in the freedom and welfare of the African race"
